Home for the holidays?

Just thinking about the holidays gives me chills….literally!    Recently one of my clients asked me to do a post of “what to wear” for the holidays………..for someone that has never made a turkey, this would really be the least of my worries.

But I am not a chef…… I am the closet consult…..so let’s get started!

First lets start with a little holiday glamour…and some tips from a fashion icon!

Edith Head with Audrey Hepburn….Roman Holiday

Wasn’t that fun?  I love that movie and it just inspired me to get dressed up this holiday season.  Although I will be in the south, I found a few great looks that I can’t wait to rush out and get!  After all, I wore only black for the past six years!

How cute is this?  A fun way to do the holidays!  Need a little coverage?  Just bring along a cute vintage leather jacket or a short black blazer to warm it up!

Get in the back of your closets ladies, and drag out the old bridesmaid dress! Add a belt, some gold hoops, a cashmere cardigan and boots or heels and you have a whole new look!  Priceless….. even the bride will be jealous!

Sexy back and oh so chic….coming or going!

Always so easy the LBD (aka litle black dress! )

Love this Orange Crush!!! Easy and warm for the midwest girls and so stylish. Pair it with nudes or rock it out with some brown boots…..Gold accessories warm it up for winter! Gorgeous and fresh this deep lavender looks great and can be worn for any occasion, holiday….wedding…black tie….new years eve…..change it up with a wrap and some booties!

How about skirting the issue with this little metallic number?  So neutral you can wear it with about any solid color sexy top.  But a simple black turtleneck would make it just as fab!  You should have that in your closet!

I love this whole combo from Emily of closetconsulting.com.  Check out her website. Every time I look at it I want to say “I’ll have what she’s having! “

Hostess with the mostess?  Bad week to use that word but this long dress is so perfect for hosting a dinner party with friends or family.  You will be cool and comfortable in the kitchen while looking chic throughout the night!

Or maybe you’d rather show off your efforts from your yoga retreat. Then this little blue number is for you!

I am obsessed with this one!  Boots or platforms it is a great dress.

I like to be warm and cozy over the holidays so a cashmere tunic and some cozy leggings with boots does it for me.  Add leather leggings and you are dressed up!  Here is a great way to wear leather pants without making them look dressy. Pop that color and come alive at the party!

Don’t forget to top off your holiday wish list with this perfect red bag! So perfect and can be thrown on with almost any combination.  It’s all about finishing with the right accessories.  Have a good time!

Can you find these 25 key pieces in YOUR closet?

When restyling a closet, I have found that it is always best to start with the essentials.  Think of them as your building blocks or foundation. Here are some easy looks that can be interpreted in your own fashion.  See how many you can check off your list!

     Pea Coat

This coat is a timeless piece – classic or girlie it’s a winner! Don’t forget to wrap it up with a gorgeous cozy scarf.  A deep dark burgundy comes to mind for me.

 Wool/Cashmere Coat

This coat has it all…..texture, neutral color, easy style, a little vintage appeal….adorable!

Wrap Sweater

The DKNY cozy has always been one of my favorites.  It comes in a luxurious silk for spring and soft merino wool for fall…..so many ways to look and feel amazing!

Easy layering scarf

Accessories are key when it comes to just looking perfectly polished and chic….stylish!

Sweater Dress

This is a no-brainer…..no-question!

Easy Cardigan

I love this look on most all ages although the dress could be a tunic with jeans just as easily.  It is the slouchy easy layer that the soft nude sweater provides for most any outfit.

T-Neck/Mock

We should all feel like Audrey in a classic Turtleneck.  Black or Charcoal grey are musts!

Classic Cashmere Sweater

I love putting on a cashmere sweater any time of the year.  Be bold in a rich color and pair it with your favorite worn jeans.

Animal Print

If you are afraid to wear animal print clothing then punch up your outfit subtly with accessories or shoes. They are simply Purr-fect!

Fabulous White Shirt

The fabulous white shirt needs no explanation. This piece is a classic for work or easy dressing with a pair of jeans.  Simply a must!

Jean Jacket

A jean jacket is a great staple item to grab on the go with cords, khakis or a really cute pair of white jeans.  Throw on your your colored denim and a white t-shirt….so easy.

Novelty Jacket / Blazer

If you have the layering piece, the perfect little novelty jacket, then no matter what you are wearing, ripped jeans or a pencil skirt, it is the finishing touch that completes the total look!

Soft Rinse Jeans

Colored denim is still a current trend.  But even in ten years….these little turquoise jeans will look great with a white t-shirt and Keds. So easy!

A-line Dress (LBD)

The little black dress is a key piece, a must have in every closet. This A-line style can be brought in at the waist or left unbelted for a chic, easy look.

Shirt Dress

A classic shirt dress whether red silk, wool or denim, is a great piece to take on vacation or where to work.  It goes with everything and is so comfortable.

Tunic Sweater

Oh…..to look this gorgeous in a cable knit sweater!!…..A perfect time of year to pair it with those leggings for a bit of coverage too.  Add classic riding boots and you are all set!

Patent Pump (Black/Nude)

Now these are some gorgeous pumps….is that a red sole I see? Ahhhhh! A nude shoe is here to stay as we will always want our legs to look as long as possible.  These should do the trick, but I love the Stuart Weitzman and LK Bennet too!

Easy Shoulder Bag

Holds everything, affordable and lasts forever. Iconic style!

Ballet Flat/Smoking Slipper

This pair of ballet flats has it all for you…..wear them with anything…floral skirt, printed jeans, black pants…..classic all the way around!

Versatile Clutch

Here are a variety of clutches that would be great for any occasion.  Take one in your carry on when you travel so you have the perfect little bag for dinner, or just to hold the essentials.  So perfect!

Classic Wallet

Can’t get a Chanel handbag yet? If you can only afford the wallet, so be it!  Not quite a million bucks but sure looks like it – a great piece to invest in!

Large Tote

This is an amazing style that holds everything…..can be worn to an interview with a business suit, pull out those jeans and ballet flats and head out to meet the girls!

A Signature Piece of Fine Jewelry

For me it’s all about arriving fashionably on time. My Hermes watch makes me feel stylish without feeling show-y!  But diamonds will do just as well!

See you next week! xoxo Joyce

TV Cabinet No More…..

Did you get one of those big beautiful armoires in the 90’s? I did, I admit it. It was so expensive but I bought it as an investment knowing that I would have it forever. But then along came flat screen TVs. My armoire was a big square box…….my new TV? Long and lean and sleek and gorgeous. What now? Maybe I can just shut the doors and move it over in a corner.

Then I got this idea when I saw a photo of a closet redo in a bedroom turned into a cute little office.
Light bulb goes on and I say to my husband (he’s handy with a  drill and wood)
honey? …. you think you could turn this armoire into a little computer stand?
And so it goes……….
First just build the box that will go inside the cabinet.

Then remove the hardware in the cabinet that used to hold the tv.  It even pulled out and swiveled! Wow!  See how the flat screen just doesn’t quite fit in the old cabinet?

Then add the old hardware and sliding panel to the new spot in the cabinet for the keyboard.

……Voila! You have a very nice and very neat way of using the old cabinet and can feel great when you shut the doors and put the computer away!   Hope you enjoyed the re-use of your old armoire!
